New AMA President Looks to Tackle COVID-19 Challenges
The beginning of June saw a change in the AMA as new President Susan Bailey, M.D. took over with a promise to support physician “heroes.” Dr. Bailey has spent most of her career working at a small, private allergy and immunology practice in Texas, and has served in multiple leadership posts within the AMA.
Dr. Bailey takes over responsibility for the AMA during a tumultuous time as the advocacy organization is deeply entrenched in lobbying efforts to push the government for further aid in the COVID-19 battle. Building on previous successes such as the CARES Act and expansion of telehealth coverage, Dr. Bailey discussed the need for the government to do more to ensure medical practices can keep their doors open.
In an interview with Fierce Healthcare, Dr. Bailey stated her other priorities include easing the burdens on physicians to help keep them safe, prevent burnout, and give them greater flexibility in treating their patients. She specifically mentioned prior authorization, payment reductions, quality reporting programs, and surprise billing as issues needing attention. She also expressed her desire to protect the Affordable Care Act, and prioritize the viability of small, independent practices.
Dr. Bailey addressed issues with racial and economic inequalities in healthcare as well, pointing to her continued support of the AMA’s Center for Health Equity in its mission to improve health equity awareness in the organization.
