Healthcare Fraud Crackdown
As a part of the government’s effort to curb fraudulent billing, federal authorities recently announced they arrest- ed nearly 300 people across the country on charges of healthcare fraud. The Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services stated that those arrested had falsely billed over $900 million to Medicare and Medicaid.
In many of the instances, federal officials indicated that the accused filed false claims for medical equipment, drug prescriptions, and medical services that were never actually provided, or unnecessary. The charges also included examples of doctors providing patients with kickbacks in order to bill their insurance for such false or unnecessary claims.
